History

My first contact with the Moroccan culture happened about nine years ago. I was watching a “novela” called “The Clone”. For the people who do not know, novela is a Hispanic television series with too much passion, and flavor. This novela told the story about an Islamic girl from Morocco who fell in love with a Brazilian boy. This novela showed lots of scenes from Morocco, and I started to like the style.

The Houses were tiled with geometrical designs that had caught my attention. I remember one foreign character asking a Moroccan guy why he does not have any paintings, but only geometric pattern designs all over the walls. He said Allah is the only one who created nature and human beings, they are not god and that is the reason they do not have painting designs.

I found this story so fascinating. Moroccan art is a mosaic of many mixtures: Zellige or Zellij is one of them.

Zellige is a tile work, ceramic tile with geometric patterns covering walls, floors, and fountains. Zellige is one Moroccan art and it is not exclusive to Morocco; it is also used in North Africa and Muslim countries.

Squares, Octagons, stars, crosses or combinations of them are its most characteristic geometric patterns.
